Instrumentation Project Engineer – NORTH AMERICA, INDIANAPOLIS, IN

Aerodyn Engineering is looking for an Instrumentation Project Engineer to lead instrumentation projects from quote through delivery; with projects focusing on aerothermal rakes and probes, sensor application and calibration, and other precision instrumentation work. You’ll own the technical and schedule details of each project, working closely with engineering and shop personnel to hit quality, budget, and schedule targets.

Shift Options:

1st Shift: Monday through Friday

What You’ll Do:

  • Fully understand project requests and plan high-level solutions to open-ended problems, primarily for aerothermal rakes/probes, sensor application/calibration, and related instrumentation projects.
  • Manage the preparation of engineering drawings for manufacturing and assembly.
  • Develop detailed, effective quotes utilizing internal resources, bill of materials, and outside quote requisitions, reviewing with management.
  • Requisition essential engineered specification parts and equipment as needed.
  • Develop and maintain the exact bill of materials for each project.
  • Own the detailed, accurate contract review process for all assigned projects.
  • Develop the manufacturing/assembly/test flow for each project, identifying risks and mitigation plans.
  • Own status updates and effective management of all project aspects, including work performed by other departments.
  • Communicate timely with customers on schedule, technical issues, concessions, scope changes, and model/print/QAD control.
  • Establish and maintain a weekly project report (S&S Reporting) for schedule and cost visibility.
  • Prepare and communicate full project details, including proposed solutions, at weekly department meetings.
  • Proactively track and monitor project profitability using Epicor labor/material cost reporting.
  • Immediately elevate necessary scope or cost changes to the department manager.
  • Communicate with and monitor outside vendors for capability, certifications, on-time delivery, and procurement of raw materials and supporting hardware.
  • Track lessons learned in the QMS Lessons Learned Log and share with team members.

What Makes You a Fit:

  • You’re comfortable owning a project’s technical details from first concept through final test.
  • You can read the schedule and cost story of a project at a glance and know when to escalate.
  • You communicate clearly and proactively with customers, not just internally.
  • You’re motivated to keep learning — instrumentation work draws on internal and external training as much as hands-on experience.

What You’ll Have:

  • Ownership of specialized, technically interesting work — aerothermal rakes, probes, sensor calibration — not commodity manufacturing.
  • Close collaboration with the Instrumentation Department Manager and shop personnel.
  • Direct visibility into project profitability and schedule performance through Epicor.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma required; Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
  • 5+ years of prior engineering and industry experience preferred.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to develop creative solutions.
  • Familiarity with Epicor or similar ERP systems preferred.
  • Strong PC skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Project, PowerPoint, Word & Outlook).
  • Strong oral, written, and technical communication skills.
  • Must be highly motivated, self-directed, and comfortable operating independently as well as within a team environment.
  • Must be customer-focused and able to work with customers and understand/respond to their needs.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to act in a professional manner no matter the circumstance.
